FDA, FTC Actions On OTC HCG Weight-Loss Products

American Association of Homeopathic Pharmacists Supports FDA, FTC Actions to Remove OTC HCG Weight-Loss Products from the Market

The American Association of Homeopathic Pharmacists (AAHP), representing the principal manufacturers and distributors of homeopathic medicines in the U.S., said today that it supports the actions taken by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to remove over-the-counter human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) weight-loss products from the market.

In August, AAHP addressed misleading claims of “homeopathic” HCG with a statement on its website. AAHP issued its statement because of concern that consumers were being led to believe that “homeopathic” HCG products have the same track record for safe use as other homeopathic drugs; in fact, there is no history or scientific support of the efficacy of a homeopathic HCG weight-loss product.

Homeopathic medicines help resolve common, self-diagnosed conditions, including symptoms of colds, allergies, etc. There are no established homeopathic weight-loss products.

FDA regulates homeopathic medicines as over-the-counter drugs and the medicines are prepared according to Good Manufacturing Practices.
